Personal true stories written by men & women who have lost an animal companion.
How the companion came into their life, touched their heart, enriched their life, and then departed.
Each story is accompanied by a beautiful drawing of the animal. Includes heroic dogs dying in war
and in police work, and a chapter by Veterinarians on pain control, hospice programs and theories,
and euthanasia – when, how, where, when not to – and more.
•Each warm and inspiring story provides comfort to those grieving over the
loss of a beloved animal companion. To reassure them that others grieve deeply also and that
grieving is a natural process following the loss of an animal companion.
•Veterinarians share stories, thoughts, and medical guidelines so everyday
people can see how they feel about and treat terminally ill animals, control pain, and perform
euthanasia. Allowing an animal companion to die gracefully can offer comfort to the owner. Hotline
support numbers provided.
•Hospice care for pets, a new program, is outlined in detail and is a
bridge to a more gentle and dignified death at home in the care of loved ones.
•Encourage recognition of service animals such as Police Dogs and the War
Dogs of Vietnam.
Veterinary Clinics are making this book available as solace to those whose ill or
injured pets must be euthanized. The book’s tender and caring story of animals and their special
closeness to a family touches the heart and offers comfort to grieving families.

Introduction
After publishing "Sleeping With Angels" many people shared with me their stories of
losing a pet companion. Since writing can be a healing process I encouraged them to record their pet
loss experiences so that I could share them in this book "On Angels Wings."
Letting go of a beloved pet companion is extremely difficult. Some comfort can be found in
knowing that although we must let go of the physical body, we can still hold on to the beautiful
memories in our hearts.
Expressing these feelings of sorrow can also be difficult. Often times our heartache is met with
comments such as "Get over it, It's only an animal," or "How can you feel that way
about a dumb creature?"
When, in fact, these creatures are precious angels to many people. How blessed and fortunate we
are to share a uniquely genuine, pure, and unconditional love with our animal companions.
Not only do pet owners grieve with the loss of a beloved animal, but so do animals grieve when
they lose a beloved master or another animal companion.
Hopefully "On Angel Wings" will help you to view the different aspects of grieving in
such a way as to give you peace, comfort, and strength. And know that you are joined by a magnitude
of other human beings that also hold onto these precious feelings.
Gratefully yours,
Alan Cunningham

Rainbow Bridge
J
ust this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies who has been
especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for
all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water, and
sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. Click drawing for full image.
All the animals who have been ill or old are restored to health and vigor, those
who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of
days and time gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; each one
misses someone very special who had been left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and
looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver. All at once he
begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet you
cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face;
your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet,
so long gone from your life but never absent from you heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together…

Review
Dr. Cunningham takes us on an autobiographical journey with
the animals in his life from four years of age through his ups and downs of
veterinary school and into his work as a nighttime emergency veterinarian. In a
forthright style he describes the tribulation of his life as a young veterinary
student trying to follow both the system and his conscience.
A gentle soul, with a level of devotion and love for his
patients beyond the call, he regales us with stories about "One Step" the one
legged cockatiel, and tugs at our hearts with the story of his beloved Boston
Terrier "Pug."
This is a great book for all animal lovers, easy to read and
hard to put down. I finished it the afternoon that I got it, with warmth in my
heart and tears in my eyes. Thank you Dr. Cunningham.
