Introduction
After publishing Sleeping With Angels and On Angels Wings I,
people shared many more stories with me of losing a beloved animal companion.
Since writing can be a therapeutic healing process, I encouraged them to record
their animal loss experiences so that I could share them in this sequel On
Angels Wings II.
Letting go of a beloved animal companion is extremely difficult. Some comfort
can be found in knowing that although we must let go of the physical body we can
still hold on to the beautiful memories in our hearts.
Like the first book, this compilation of stories has three goals. First it is
to encourage recognition of service animals, including the war dogs of Vietnam.
The second is to provide comfort with heartwarming stories of those grieving
over the loss of an animal companion. The third contains stories and medical
guidelines from veterinarians and certified pet loss grief counselors.
The loss of an animal companion can be profound and significant . To many
people the loss of a beloved animal friend is similar to the loss of a family
member. Grief is normal and unique -- we can't change or interfere with that
process. It is also very personal, essential, and private.
No one else can say that they know how you feel, nor can they take from the
uniqueness of your grief. For most people it helps to share with other
empathetic listeners your feelings for the lost animal companion. Sharing these
emotions tends to validate your feelings and gives you strength to move forward
to a healthy acceptance and closure. Many support organizations are available to
help. Please take advantage of their assistance.
Respectfully yours,
Alan Blain Cunningham

Rainbow Bridge
J
ust this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies who has been
especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for
all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water, and
sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. Click drawing for full image.
All the animals who have been ill or old are restored to health and vigor, those
who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of
days and time gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; each one
misses someone very special who had been left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and
looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver. All at once he
begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet you
cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face;
your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet,
so long gone from your life but never absent from you heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together
