More About the Author
"I Walk Alone" was written originally in honor of animals that died alone, without ceremony or fanfare. But then I also added stories of happiness. This book is for special spirits that touched my heart, left impressions on my soul, made me question, that lived glorious and fleeting lives, and then some quietly departed. This is their song, their voice, and their chance to be heard. Teddy

What does it matter. What does it matter if I write about pet loss and grief? Meg Click drawing for larger image.A few years ago a radio announcer asked me, "Do you think the majority of people in the real and everyday world really care that much about pet loss and grief?" At the time I was idealistic and replied, "Yes." But then I realized that most of my world, as a veterinarian, evolves around people that care about their animals. Sadly enough, when I started to look outside of that world, I discovered that most people and religion as well probably don't get the true feeling of the sorrow that accompanies the death of an animal companion. "Get over it, it's just an animal, go buy another one to replace the dead one," are all too common phrases returned. The psychologists label it disenfranchised grief meaning it doesn't belong, it isn't normal. At times it seems that I walk alone with these feelings. But along the way many people have managed to lift my spirits and to give me strength. This book contains a few examples that help me to realize the importance of the human and animal bond. And I now realize that it is an important bond of pure love that can never be broken or cast aside. And in some sense I am also comforted to know that I don't always walk alone.
Every Animal You Met "Every animal you met there is in a
story. The stories are all written now; they had their beginnings, their
middles, and their ends, but now they are complete. That’s where their
lives are – in those stories.
But those stories can happen again and those animals can have their lives over again every time a human sits down to read." Dennis Hamley - "Hare’s Choice"

Dr. Cunningham is the author of many books, all of which you can read about in Precious Pets. Currently he works as a veterinarian at a nighttime emergency clinic. He also volunteers and heads the Utah pet loss hotline as a certified pet loss grief counselor. In addition he volunteers as an advocate for "end of life choices" for humans. He is the recipient of Best of State Utah 2004 for his work as a veterinarian in pet loss and grief support. Furthermore, he actively campaigns for a commemorative postage stamp and national war memorial for the War Dogs in Vietnam. These valiant warriors gave their lives to save American Soldiers. Nearly 4,000 canine soldiers fought in Vietnam but less than 200 returned stateside. Most were left behind to an uncertain future with the South Vietnamese or euthanized. Many of the dog handlers requested to bring them home because they owed their lives to their canine soldier counterparts. Unfortunately, they were denied. These soldiers desperately want to pay tribute to the War Dogs of Vietnam with commemorative postage stamps and memorials. The postmaster general has denied this request twice and presently a third push is on for a commemorative war dog stamp. Dr. Cunningham urges citizens to write their congressman in behalf of these heroic canine soldiers. Read more on Dr. Cunningham.
